Cleaning wall panels is usually easier than tiles or painted walls. Due to the smooth surface and the limited number of joints, dust, soap residues, and limescale adhere less quickly. In most cases, lukewarm water, a soft cloth, and a mild cleaning agent are sufficient. The right approach does depend on the material: acoustic panels mainly require dry cleaning, while wall panels in the bathroom benefit from regular rinsing and drying.

This is how to clean wall panels safely

Always work from mild to more intense. This prevents scratches, dull spots, or damage to the top layer. Test a new product first in an inconspicuous place and use a cloth that is well wrung out, not dripping wet.

  1. First, remove loose dust with a dry microfiber cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush.
  2. Make a soapy solution of lukewarm water with a pH-neutral or mild non-abrasive cleaning agent.
  3. Wipe the panel with light pressure and work in strips from top to bottom.
  4. Remove cleaning residues with clean water if the product requires it.
  5. Dry afterwards with a soft cloth, especially in the bathroom. This prevents streaks and limescale formation.

Which cleaning agents are suitable?

For most wall panels, mild household products are the safest choice. Think of a pH-neutral cleaner, a gentle all-purpose cleaner without abrasive particles, a vinyl cleaner for SPC or PVC panels or a small amount of green soap in water. Preferably do not use aggressive degreasers, abrasive creams, solvents, acetone or hard sponges. These can affect the colour, damage a protective layer or dull the shine. Chlorine and strong acids are also not a universal solution: only use them if the manufacturer expressly allows it.

Removing limescale, soap residues and streaks in the bathroom

Bathroom wall panels mainly deal with limescale and soap residues. Prevention works better here than scrubbing hard afterwards. Rinse the wall briefly after showering, wipe away water with a squeegee and dry afterwards with a soft cloth. If there is still limescale, choose a mild descaler suitable for the type of panel. Do not let the product sit unnecessarily long, rinse well and dry the surface again. Avoid abrasive products and strong acids if you are not sure how the top layer will react.

Maintenance by type of wall panel

Not every wall panel reacts the same to moisture or cleaning agents. With this overview, you can choose the right approach more quickly.

Type of wall panel Best approach Prefer to avoid
SPC or PVC wall panels Clean with a soft cloth, lukewarm water and a mild cleaning agent. Drying well helps against streaks. Abrasives, solvents and hard brushes.
Acoustic wall panels Dust regularly or use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush. Only clean lightly damp if the finish allows it. Soaking wet cloths, plenty of water and steam.
Bathroom panels with a smooth top layer Rinse after use, dry off and remove limescale in good time with a suitable mild descaler. Chlorine, aggressive acids and abrasive creams.
High gloss or acrylic panels Use a soft microfibre cloth and wipe without pressure to avoid scratches and dull spots. Scouring sponges and products with granules.

Frequently asked questions

about cleaning wall panels

In dry areas, regular dusting is often sufficient. In a bathroom, weekly cleaning is advisable, supplemented with a quick rinse and drying after use. This prevents limescale and soap residue from building up.

Yes, as long as it is a mild, non-abrasive variant and the product is suitable for the material of your wall panel. Never blindly use a strong degreaser or a product with abrasive particles.

Only with caution. Some panels or top layers do not tolerate acidic products well. Therefore, always check the maintenance instructions for the panel and test first in an inconspicuous place.

Usually not. Heat and moisture can stress joints, adhesive connections, felt layers or decorative layers. Preferably choose a slightly damp cloth, unless the manufacturer explicitly allows steam cleaning.

Dull spots often occur due to overly aggressive cleaning agents, scrubbing too hard, or residues of cleaning products that have not been rinsed properly. Clean afterwards with clean water and a soft cloth and switch to a milder product.

Always start by removing dry dust and then clean only with lukewarm water and a soft, well-wrung cloth. If you are unsure about the finish or maintenance instructions, opt for product-specific advice instead of experimenting with strong agents.
