Hardwax-Oil Effect: the best choice for an untreated look

It is hugely popular: the untreated look. But how do you create it?

Sanded wood often has a lighter colour than treated wood. Osmo Hardwax-Oil Effect (3041) was developed to keep this light colour. The product contains a small amount of white pigment, which helps the wood keep its light appearance.

After applying one very thin coat of Hardwax-Oil Effect (3041), we advise finishing the second coat with Osmo Hardwax-Oil Original Clear. This combination gives an untreated look.

Hardwax-Oil: our standard for wood finishing

Optimal protection thanks to the two-coat system. This is how it works: the first coat penetrates the wood to protect it from within, so the wood can keep breathing. The second coat hardens in the upper grain of the wood, creating a protective layer.

Hardwax-Oil Effect offers excellent protection against water, beer, wine and other liquids and is suitable for your floor, walls, stairs and ceiling, among others. It is easy to spot-repair without sanding and, once dry, completely safe for people, animals and plants.

Good to know:

  • Hardwax-Oil Effect is suitable for light surfaces such as oak, spruce, pine and beech. On dark substrates and wood species, Hardwax-Oil Effect may create a white haze.
  • It is important that every part of the wood is covered with Osmo 3041. Because of the white pigment, this can be hard to see.

Tip: look against the light to check that every part of the wood has been covered with the first coat.

Please note: the appearance and adhesion of our products may vary by wood species, surface and application method. We therefore recommend testing products on a sample first.

1. The product must be stirred well for 2 minutes. After opening the tin, the oil and wax are separated.

2. Apply the first coat of Hardwax-Oil Effect very thinly with a roller or brush to the new or sanded wood. Roll or brush the product out well and make sure every part is covered. You can check this by looking against the light. Always apply along the planks and the wood grain.

3. Mistakes made during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 30 minutes afterwards, such as roller marks or brush hairs.

4. Drying of the first coat takes about 24 hours. At lower temperatures or higher humidity, drying takes longer. Always ensure good ventilation by opening windows and doors.

5. Apply the second finishing coat thinly with Hardwax-Oil Original Clear. Apply this coat with the Osmo microfibre roller or a brush as well.

6. The second coat will be dry in approx. 8-12 hours; see point 4.

For surfaces already treated with Osmo or another brand or product, always do a test first. For renovation, we advise choosing the Osmo renovation bundle.

After treatment with Osmo Hardwax-Oil, it is important to maintain the wood well. Wisch-Fix is the product to mop and clean your floor or stairs. It contains a small amount of wax that nourishes the wood. We recommend using it weekly or every other week.

Over time, walkways and frequently used areas of the surface may start to wear. Liquid Wax Cleaner is then ideal to use.

For annual maintenance, we recommend treating the floor once a year with Osmo Liquid Wax Refresher.
