Description
Osmo TopOil: the best choice for colouring and protecting small surfaces
Osmo TopOil is a product based on oil and wax, available in seven different colours. TopOil offers excellent protection against water, beer, wine and other liquids and is suitable for wooden furniture, kitchens and worktops, among others.
When you start finishing a piece of furniture, kitchen cabinet or worktop, we recommend good preparation. Good preparation means carrying out a number of steps before you start finishing, and sometimes even before assembly.
Check unfinished wood for unevenness or rough spots. If necessary, lightly sand the surface with a fine grit
- Maximum P120: if you will be rolling
- Maximum P180: if you will be buffing/rubbing.
- Stained, painted or lacquered wood: Wood that still has an old colour or finish must be sanded back completely before another colour can be applied evenly. Sand the surface bare with P40, P80 and finish with a fine grit (P120 to P180; see Untreated/unfinished wood)
- Oiled or impregnated wood: If you want to treat oiled or impregnated wood with a clear product, we recommend doing a test first. If you want to colour it, we recommend sanding the surface bare.
After treatment with TopOil, it is important to maintain your wood properly. You can easily do this with Osmo Spray Cleaner, a maintenance and cleaning product perfect for smaller wooden surfaces.
Is the top layer more heavily soiled? Then use Liquid Wax Cleaner.
For more serious wear, you will need to touch up the top layer with an extra coat of TopOil.
Wood that often comes into contact with moisture, such as wood in the bathroom or wooden worktops, must be better protected than other surfaces. Oak in particular is very sensitive to moisture combined with iron such as taps, basins or holders. Therefore impregnate the wood before installation with Osmo Wood Protector, which prevents mould caused by moisture, reduces swelling and shrinking and preserves the colour of the wood for longer.
The appearance and adhesion of our products may vary by wood species, surface and application method. We therefore recommend testing products on a sample first.
- Shake the product well for 2 minutes. After opening the tin, the oil and wax are separated.
- Apply the first coat of TopOil with a white pad or brush to the new or sanded wood, along the wood grain.
- Within 20 minutes, buff the TopOil dry with the fleece pad, also along the wood grain. Mistakes made during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 30 minutes afterwards.
- Drying of the first coat takes about 8-10 hours. At lower temperatures or higher humidity, drying takes longer. Always ensure good ventilation, with windows and doors open both during and after treatment.
- Then apply 3 more coats (4 in total) in the same way as the first. The colour becomes more intense with each coat. Finish the colour coats with a clear coat: 1 colour coat means 3 clear coats, 2 colour coats means 2 clear coats and 3 colour coats means 1 clear coat.
- Drying of TopOil takes about 8-10 hours.
If you buff the surface, it is important to apply 4 coats to protect the surface sufficiently against moisture.
Notes:
- Cloths used to apply or buff off TopOil must be rinsed with water because they carry a risk of spontaneous combustion. Always rinse cloths with water before throwing them in the bin.
- For surfaces already treated with Osmo or another brand or product, always do a test first.
