Installing wall panels is quite easy to do yourself if you work neatly and follow the correct order. The basics are almost always the same: a flat and clean surface, accurate measurements, setting the first panel perfectly straight, and finishing the edges neatly. Whether you are installing PVC wall panels, mounting wooden wall panels, or attaching acoustic panels, it is those preparatory steps that determine the final result.

With the following step-by-step plan, you can avoid the most common mistakes, such as crooked starting lines, too much glue, or too little space for expansion. This way, you work faster, neater, and with less repair work.

This is how to prepare the installation well

Start with the location where the panels will go. Determine whether you will work vertically, horizontally, or as wainscoting, and then measure the entire wall. Also check sockets, pipes, corners, and any cutouts. Calculate in advance how many panels you will need and take into account saw loss, especially with patterns or continuous structures.

The surface must be flat, dry, dust-free, and grease-free. On stable tiles or a smooth plaster wall, you can often glue directly, as long as the adhesion of the existing layer is good. Gluing on loose wallpaper, peeling paint, or a powdering wall is not a good base. First, level out any unevenness, as any height difference will be visible in the panels or in the joints.

Tools and materials

For a neat installation, you usually only need a tape measure, pencil, spirit level or laser, adhesive that matches the panel type, 3 mm spacers, a saw with fine teeth, and a sealant for finishing edges and joints where necessary. With glossy or scratch-sensitive panels, keep the protective film on the visible side for as long as possible.

Making custom wall panels

First, accurately mark each panel and always double-check the measurements before cutting. For PVC wall panels and other hard decorative panels, it is best to work with a fine tooth and a slow sawing speed, so that the edge remains tight. The same principle applies to wooden wall cladding, although the exact tools depend on the construction of the panel. If you need to make cutouts for sockets, taps, or pipes, saw slowly and support the panel well to prevent breakage or frayed cuts.

This is how you install the panels neatly and straight

The first panel determines the rest

Set the first panel perfectly straight. This is the most important step of the entire installation. Work with a 3 mm gap along the floor, ceiling, and adjacent walls, so that the material can still move. Use spacers to keep that joint consistent everywhere. Place the panel dry against the wall first to check if the size, cutouts, and position are correct.

Applying adhesive correctly

Apply the adhesive usually in vertical strips on the back of the panel or directly on the wall, depending on the product advice. Stay a little away from the edges and do not use unnecessarily much glue. Between the glue strips, you typically leave some space, so that the panel can press down well and the adhesive distributes evenly. Around cutouts, apply adhesive extra carefully, so that the panel fits nicely there.

Connect the next panels

Press the first panel once it is properly aligned and then work panel by panel. Fit each subsequent piece tightly, but do not force anything. For systems with tongue, groove or click connections, always follow the product-specific installation method. Regularly check with a spirit level to ensure the line is still correct. Press panels from the centre outwards, so that air and tension are better distributed.

Gluing or mounting without drilling

Attaching wall panels without drilling is perfectly fine on a flat, stable and load-bearing wall with suitable high tack mounting adhesive. This is often the quickest solution for renovations. If the wall is uneven, you want to conceal pipes, or you are installing heavier wooden or acoustic panels, then framing or additional mechanical fastening may be a better choice. For ceilings, gluing alone is usually not sufficient and additional fastening is often necessary.

Finishing edges and allowing to cure

Allow the adhesive to cure according to the product's technical data sheet, usually about 24 hours before fully loading the installation. After that, finish visible edges, joints or wet areas according to the prescribed method, for example with a suitable end strip or with appropriate silicone sealant. Remove protective film only after installation, especially with glossy panels. Then clean with a soft cloth and a suitable maintenance product. Avoid aggressive cleaners that can dull the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

about installing wall panels

The cost mainly depends on the type of panel, the condition of the substrate, the number of cuts, and the chosen finish. If you install it yourself, you mainly pay for panels, glue, sealant, and any profiles. If you have the installation done, then labour hours and preparatory work are added. The flatter the wall, the quicker and more efficiently the installation usually goes.

On a flat and sturdy substrate, you can often attach wall panels without drilling using a suitable mounting adhesive. The wall must be clean, dry, and grease-free. Avoid mounting on loose wallpaper or damaged paint, as the adhesive will not bond to the weak substrate.

The basics are similar, but there are differences in weight, cutting method, and finish. Installing PVC wall panels is often done fully glued to a smooth wall. Installing wooden wall panels or wooden wall cladding sometimes requires extra attention to framing, fastening, and visible joints. Therefore, always check the installation instructions of the chosen system.

Acoustic wall panels are usually glued directly or mechanically fixed to a batten structure, depending on the substrate and the desired result. On a flat wall, gluing is often sufficient. If you want extra correction for an uneven wall or a solution that can be easily disassembled, then mounting on a frame is more practical.
